The Maker Spirit is alive and well at Rickshaw Bagworks, as evidenced by the fantastic turnout for our SF Etsy Pop-Up event last weekend. Rickshaw has been collaborating with the SF Etsy Street Team for two years now in an annual “craft your own” messenger bag project. SF Etsy members create their own “flap” designs, and Rickshaw assembles them into one-of-a-kind messenger bags. The latest round of bags are on display at the Rickshaw Factory Store in Dogpatch through August 15. The project is coordinated by Rebecca Saylor, founder of OodleBaDoodle and team captain of the SF Etsy Street Team. Rebecca is also one of the participants in the custom messenger bag project. I had a quick chat with Rebecca to learn more about her maker spirit.
After thousands of miles of testing, Rickshaw Bagworks is finally launching their long-awaited bicycle panniers. Rickshaw's new Duo Pannier is a double-sided design that mounts over the top of a standard rear cargo rack. "Our friends have been asking us for panniers ever since we started the company seven years ago," says Rickshaw founder and bag designer, Mark Dwight. "Our design is intended for everyday urban commuting, but I've put it to the test on my last three 500-mile rides from SF to LA, and it has worked perfectly for my style of credit-card touring."

The “3-F’s” of Product Design for the New Age of Sustainability
Design has become an essential component of most serious product development efforts. The notion that “Good Design is Good Business” is widely accepted and practiced today (though there are many notable exceptions). Technology has helped meld aesthetic design with functional engineering, and made the translation to physical products much more graceful, efficient and cost effective. It’s hard to imagine there was considerable debate about “form versus function” when I was graduating from college in the early ‘80’s – a time when “design” was often dismissed as a frivolous expense and “industrial designers” were largely regarded as “stylists” – disdained by engineers and dismissed by senior executives. Today “and” has replaced “versus”, as Form and Function have become the strategic twins of modern product development.
